ARNE DUNCAN VISITS SUMNER!

December 11, 2006 was a huge day at Sumner.  We were very honored to have Arne Duncan, CEO of the Chicago Public Schools, visit us. He toured both of our buildings and went in many classrooms to speak with our teachers and students.  Mr. Duncan was impressed and delighted at the quality of teaching and learning that he observed and the continued progress made by Sumner students.  He said, "The West Side is very lucky to have such an excellent school here."

Our Own Mr. Buford has a Book Release!

Congratulations are pouring in from schools around the country.  Mr. Buford, Acting Counselor at Sumner, has completed his first book: Not All Teachers are Parents, But All Parents Are Teachers (Air Leaf Publishers, $14.95).

Two papers, The Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and The North Lawndale Community News, have given it rave reviews.  Since its release in December 2006, it has been featured on the Les Brown Show, Heartbeat of America with host William Shatner; and has broken into the Top 10 Hot New Releases as reported by amazon.com.

The book is sure to inspire and challenge parents and teachers of African American students.  It has numerous "research-based" tips and ideas designed to counter the effects of the "achievement gap."
